Are you just being polite when you tell your friend, the artist, that his or her artwork is good? Similarly, if your friends all tell you that your art contemporary is really cool, are they simply being nice?
It\’s about psychology. Take it from me; an awful artist whose friends used to feed me rubbish constantly after I painted another self-portrait that looked like a sun-dried tomato, the answer is in the initial reaction. It\’s the way it\’s said.
I used to struggle with paints for hours on end as I tried to etch my massive imagination onto a 20\” x 32\” blank canvas, and then I\’d end up three hours later with a regurgitated mess heap on paper. It was funny. How do I come to that conclusion? Because my friends used to walk into my dorm room and fall over themselves laughing and on the brink of tears! Please don\’t get me wrong, I have some brilliant friends, but I\’m just not that good at it. I\’ve never aspired to be the next art contemporary genius. I\’ve since had to channel my talents in other directions. But remember that it\’s a telltale sign that a work of art is not up-to-par if it gets laughed at at first sight!
A long pause can also say it all. If more than two seconds pass between someone seeing an art contemporary piece and commenting, then the artwork in question probably doesn\’t give the audience much to talk about.
